Q.Maple Tree In Pot

Zone 99109 | ssmi26 added on September 1, 2020 | Answered

I have a (I think) Maple tree start that I got from the Arbor Group. It was just a stick with 3 small leaves. I planted it in a pot and now it has about 20 leaves, but still just a stick. Can I continue to grow this in a pot until next summer when I can plant it in the ground? How big of a pot should I use? Thanks! Sharon

Most Maples will not tolerate container life. Some of the smaller species can, but not the larger species.

You should, definitely, plant this in ground in Autumn or Spring. A Summer planting will be a death sentence, usually. Keeping it in container will be harsh on the tree, and will stunt it. Getting it in ground as soon as the weather is not hot or cold (Mild weather is ideal).
