Making A Champaca Tree Bloom

Question

We planted a 6′ Champaca tree (Michelia champaca) from the Sunoi nursery four years ago; it is now over 10′ high and 8′ on the base. However, it has not yet flowered. It is getting regular water a the leaves are lime-green and look healthy. How long does it usually take this tree to bloom? Is there a suitable fertilizer regime that could induce flowers next season? The tree is getting full sun. We are located in Fremont.

These trees are slow growing and may not be mature enough to bloom till year 5. The buds are sensitive to cold weather and you are right on the edge of the hardiness zone. It does need rich, slightly acidic soil so if your soil is more alkaline, that could be a factor. Consistent watering is important, too. Sources conflict on whether part sun or full sun is ideal.

Fertilize in spring before new growth starts using a general, all purpose fertilizer and follow the package instructions.
