Q.maintenance of outdoor bamboo

we own a home that 30+ years ago we installed a small thicket of bamboo(3-4foot). it is now 60 foot long after trimming. Someone came to trim it down and cut it down and back. it now looks like just bamboo shafts. what would happen if I were to have it cut down to about a foot high, would it effect next years growth?
