Maiden hair ferns

I have straggly maiden hair ferns. Should I cut the straggly fronds off at soil level so the plant will re-shoot, and if so when? They are growing in pots on a back covered deck area. They just don’t seem to thrive or grow. Please help.

Pruning of damaged or dead fronds can be done when necessary with a scissors.
