Maiden grass not growing

Question

I have 3 clumps of maiden grass . They are 2 years old and are in southern Maine 2 blocks from the ocean. They get afternoon sun. This year all 3 are dead although a different ornamental grass is fine.

Should I replace them?

Should I try something else?

What could have caused them to die? I cut them back in late October.
