Magnolia trees

Our magnolia tree is about 30/50 years old. It is end of March and so many of the leaves are turning yellow and falling off. Is this normal and, if not, what can we do for it? It is a beautiful tree and I hate to see it fail. Thank you so much!

It is normal for some older leaves to turn yellow and shed from the tree.
If it is a large amount of the tree’s leaves…
Has there been changes in temperatures?
A sudden drop in temperature, excess heat or drought period, the leaves may yellow and drop.
Check for injury to the trunk and bark. Winter sun scald can effect the tree.
A soil test is a good idea. It could be an nutrient issue. Magnolias are know for Iron deficiency. A soil with to low of a ph makes the iron less available.
You can reduce alkalinity by adding peat moss or another organic fertilizer.
Make sure the soil is well draining and that no weeds are growing under your tree.
Avoid heavy pruning.
