low asparagus production

We transplanted Asparagus plants 5 years ago. We had a decent yield the following year. Then we had all that snow, rain and flooding in ’09 and ’10 which we thought was responsible for ’11 poor yield. This year, they seemed to be doing much better, but the stalks stayed extremely skinny with the exception of some random stalks, and they never gained any momentum in the overall growth. The area we garden was once very rocky but years of picking out rocks and adding organic compost created a very productive garden. Everything else is doing really well with the exception of the asparagus.

While weeding, I found that there were roots almost growing out of the ground and I quickly built up the soil with compost. Of course, the asparagus season is over by now, but I’m wondering what the problem is and the best way to deal with it. I’m thinking maybe the flooding floated more rocks to the surface and they are pushing the roots up and impeding the growth. Would that be a logical reason for the low yield ? And if so, how should I go about fixing the issue? Do I have to dig it up and re-trench the area? When should I do this? Next spring? This autumn? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

I would first do a soil test.
This will let you know what your soil may need to make sure it is correct for good growing conditions.

If the roots are pushed from the soil, yes I do think you will need to correct this.
