Q.looking for ideas for a shady garden

Zone 16511 | broaster_chicken added on May 6, 2019 | Answered

We have a large back area that is more shade than sun and would like to plant some flowers or flowering shrubs. We have some ferns and hostas but flowers…non-invasive…would look great. Any suggestions?

Some flowering shrubs for PA are Lindera benzoin, spicebush, azalea and rhododendron, Kalmia latifolia, mountain laurel and many others. When choosing a plant for shade, it is important to differential deep dark shade to areas that are mostly in shade but receive filter/dappled sunlight or morning sun only. Knowing if the areas tend to stay dry or moist is also important as some plants are well-adapted to wet areas and others will rot in the same area.
