I'm guessing this is for outdoors? Like on a patio. I would start with a good sized container, if you want to include several perennials, such as 22 to 24 inches (0.5 to 0.6 m) across. Use a good, lightweight potting soil that will provide excellent drainage.
For aesthetics, include a tall perennial for the back or the center. Then mid-level plants, plus some around the edge that will spill over. (Thriller, filler and spiller)
Then select early blooming or spring blooming, summer blooming, and fall perennials.
Spring bloomers for sun could be columbine, hellebore, woodland phlox, dianthus, coral bells.
Summer bloomers for sun would be coneflower, coreopsis, phlox, miniature rose.
Fall bloomers would be mum, aster.
If you have a little space, you could add a couple annuals, which will bloom all summer.
