Live in NY above NYC. I have two fig trees in large containers. Can I prune obvious dead branches while the tree is in growth mode?

Or should I wait? Thanks. Both trees have borne good fruit in the past. Small but good tasting. I put the trees in my garage during the winter and water every month or so. Too many branches are blackened and have no sign of life, not every tiny green sprouts. Will I harm the tree if I cut away the dead (I mean dead) branches to increase the good branches getting good nourishment? Thanks.

You are right. You can prune away dead or diseased branches as soon as you see them at any time of year.
