Lilies

I bought lily bulbs this spring and planted them; however, they barely poked out of the ground and bloomed. I have never seen this happen before. Is there a reason this could happen?

Verify how deeply you planted the bulbs. A good rule of thumb is 6 inches deep, though it can vary between varieties, with some requiring 9 inch depth planting. Bulbs should be spaced 8 inches apart.
Watering should be regular and bulbs should never be allowed to dry out in the soil, when newly planted.
Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer applications.
Infestations of aphids or mites can cause stunted leaves and flowering.
Avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungus.
Deep shade planting will result in stunted growth.
Bulb health could be to blame as well as temperature fluctuations.
