Q.Lemon Tree And No Blooms

Zone Chicago 60628 | ramigln added on April 15, 2025 | Answered

I started a lemon tree from seed about 7 or 8 years ago. Its very green and seems healthy. If I rub some leaves I get a nice lemon smell on my hand. I live in Chicago. Its on my patio during the summer and early fall. During the winter its at a west window. I do feed it. The problem is no blooms so far. Any thoughts and suggestions would be great. Thanks Glenn

Unfortunately, it may be barely entering the period of maturity. They can take up to 15 years from seed, but they can also start as early as about 7 or 8 years. Unless you provide extra lighting through the winter, it may be on the upper end of that age range, and may not fruit at all if it doesn't get at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sun per day. You could get away with 400 watts, but the more the better for indoor lighting. I'd give it a few more years before considering it "sterile". Though it might not actually be sterile, it may not have the conditions or the genetics to fruit properly.
