Leaf Loss

My bird of paradise plant grows a new leaf regularly, but as one grows the lowest leaf yellows and dies. Is this normal? The plant is 3 years old with no sign of any flower yet. Growing in a south-facing conservatory.

There are several reasons why a plant gets yellow leaves. Typically it is a water or fertilizer issue. Make sure that it is getting the right amount of water and is fertilized (especially with iron) is a first step. Since a little extra phosphorus will not hurt, I would give the plants some phosphorus, like bone meal, just to make sure that all the bases are covered.
