lawn weeds

Question

We have an odd “grass” growing that seems to be taking over. Easy to pull, long stiff stems with seed pods that pop off as soon as they are disturbed. They grow in what I call clumps. It seems to be all over town, not just our lawn. We are in northeastern New Jersey.
