lawn and a fence

I have a section of grass that needs to be raised against my fence so I can then put bark mulch over with some trees but I don’t know how to start. Could I just fill the area with leftover grass and soil and place a breathable cloth between the fence and the raised dirt or could I just put it against the fence without anything? Do I have to remove the existing grass along the fence before I fill it in? What would be the best solution?

Removing the sod and them building up the soil may be the best solution.
You can re sod the new area or seed in the grass.

Planting sod or grass right up to the fence should be fine but keep in mind how you will mow or trim the grass up against the fence.
Leaving a space can help with lawn maintenance and keep the fence from possible damage.
