Did your grass go dormant in summer heat? If so, it will rebound when weather cools. In my region, we had drought as well as unusual heat. If you didn’t water the lawn and had similar conditions, there may be dead patches. I suggest that you rake the straw areas using some real oomph. Lightly fertilize – about half the usual rate with no weed killer – and water it in well. In a week, you’ll know if you have dead patches that need seeding in about a month. You can try to spread seed now but you’ll need to water at least twice daily in summer heat. After germination, water 1/2″ twice weekly when rain is insufficient. Use “water smart” seed that is encased in a moisture-holding compound. Apply fall weed and feed formula only if enough time has lapsed since seed germination or you may kill the newly emerged grass. So read all instructions carefully. If you don’t think heat or drought are your problems, please send a photo. You may have disease or grubs, moles or voles.
