Q.Lavender Cutting In Water, Grew Roots, Roots Turning Brown, Why?

Zone indoors | Anonymous added on October 16, 2021 | Answered

I have a cutting of lavender and it’s been in water for two or three weeks and it’s been growing roots and stems, seemed to be thriving…the other day I gave it a new container of water differently shaped so the smaller roots had room to grow in new directions. The bottle originally held lemonade but had been washed several times. The next day the roots were all stringy and partly brown. I immediately put it back in the original container with yet more new water but nothing has improved. Is the cutting dead? Do I cut off these roots and try to start again?

I suggest planting it in well draining potting soil. The longer a plant is rooted in water, the longer it will take to adjust to soil life.
