Killing tree stumps with salt

Killing tree stumps with salt and the effect the salt would have on newly planted trees close by. I have several hybrid poplar trees in my front yard that I wish to cut down and want to be sure rooting system is killed. I think the salt method may work but am worried that it will kill off other trees that I wish to keep as well as two newly planted maples. Can you help with this?
