killing cottonwood tree roots

We cut the tree down and removed the main root but the remaining roots continue to sprout everywhere including my lawn. I have a retaining wall and the house foundation that I am concerned about being damaged. Any suggestions? I am tired of digging up roots that have an inch diameter out of my lawn. Thanks, Lisa
