Keeping Cats Out of the Garden

We have an enormous amount of cats in our neighborhood and they like to sleep in and around our yard, using it as the community bathroom. I am at my wits end; please help!

I personally like keeping a hose and sprayer handy and squirt them when I see them in my yard.
