Gardening Know How Questions & Answers - https://questions.gardeningknowhow.comHello all, I just started my first garden with the help of my uncle who has had one for years. Anyway, I bought a Jiffy Peat Pellet seed starter kit and things are working great. These photos are from this morning March 26 and I have all different types of seeds in there. Going from left to right I have Bush Cucumber in my first two rows then red banana pepper in row 3&4. In row 5&6 I have Cherry tomatoes and row 7&8 I have squash. Row 9&10 I have green beans where the most action is. Finally, in row 11&12 I have watermelon and onions. Now my issue is that the green beans are hitting the lid and I am not sure if I should take it off for good or keep it on and crush the top of the green beans.

Once a plant sprouts, it should not have a cover and it must go under an intense light source. Otherwise, you will have problems with mold and "leggy" seedlings. I would transfer the sprouted pellets out from under the dome into another container with holes in the bottom. I sometimes use take-out containers. Another option is to remove the dome/lid, cluster the germinated pellets together and loosely cover cells that haven't germinated with plastic wrap. The last option is to remove the dome and keep the pellets that haven't germinated consistently moist but not soggy. This requires checking them twice daily. I find that misting does not keep peat pellets moist; they lose water faster than twice daily misting replaces.
