Jasmine accidentally mowed down

Question

Our church planted over $4,000 worth of Jasmine for ground cover last year on an embankment. Someone with good intentions mowed the entire embankment a few days ago. It had some unwanted grass and small pines growing in it which we were pulling up. It’s rainy season (March). We want to know when to fertilize and when to spray a weed or grass killer. Do you think the plants will regrow themselves?

I assume that you are referring to Asian Jasmine, commonly planted as a ground cover.

This evergreen ground cover needs generally only 1 pruning a season, late winter.
In large areas such as you mention, you can use a mower and trim to about 4″ in height.

When the buds break in spring, it should not take long before the Jasmine bounces back with new growth.

If the plants were new and not well established, you may see some winter loss and less aggressive growth.

Keep in mind that Asiatic Jasmine can take up to 3 seasons to grow a good ground cover–if you used small plugs for the plantings. Less time if you used larger plants.

A light fertilizer can be applied 3 or 4 times throughout the growing season.
Weed and grass killers are herbicides and will kill everything it touches–including your Jasmine. Hand pulling weeds is the safest way.

Mulching is a good defense against weeds.
