Japanese Wisteria Sucker Control

I have a beautiful Japanese Wisteria that I have trained to grow up in the corner of my backyard and then onto the top of my privacy fence. The past couple of years, it has sent up suckers along the base. I cut them every 2 weeks but it seems that if I cut 20 one week, 40 show up the next week. Is there any way to reduce the abundance of these suckers?

There’s nothing much you can do but keep cutting.
