Gardening Know How Questions & Answers - https://questions.gardeningknowhow.comThere are no leaves and you can break off the outer small limbs. I did notice down on the lowest branch there are a few little red spikes starting to form. What has happened to our tree? We have had it 4-5 years now.

With the very cold winter experienced by the majority of the county, I am concerned your Japanese Maple my have suffered some winter damage.
Do you know the variety that you have planted and it’s growing zone rating? Do the branches snap off or bend?
I would recommend implementing the ‘wait and see’ tactic. Seeing some growth is a good sign.
