Japanese maple disease

I have a Japanese maple that is losing leaves and after checking closely I found it has pods hanging on the limbs, like the pods that normally show up in cedars that are attached by insects. The pods are approx 1 to 1. 5 inches in length. What can I use on my tree that will not damage the tree? It is approx 5 years old. Thanks.
