Jade Plant – Disturbed Roots

Question

I’ve had my jade plant for two and a half months now. Three weeks ago, my jade plant tipped over while I was out. It wasn’t a long fall, perhaps 6 inches, but most of the soil spilled out and some of the leaves got damaged. When I was replanting my plant, I’m afraid the roots snapped clean off the stems. I went ahead and replanted it, stabilizing it as much as I could. I held off on watering it for at least a week, but now the leaves are really thin and limp, and some of them are getting wrinkly, so I’ve stepped up watering to every two or three days (checking that the soil isn’t too damp before watering).

The plant’s placed next to a north-facing window that gets lots of natural light all day (though not direct sun) and indoor lights once it gets dark out, and I used to water it weekly with just a tablespoon of water. Pre-accident, my plant had nice fat leaves and was even getting a red tinge on its leaves. Really hope to return it to its previous state 🙁

Limp jades with shriveling leaves are usually attributed to under-watering. I believe your jade is being under-watered not because of your watering practices but because the plant has no roots – you said the roots snapped clean off the stems.

But, all hope is not lost yet. I would recommend trying to propagate your jade plant by rooting some stems per the instructions in this article:

Also, and this is just a side note, jade plants should be put in pots with at least one drainage hole.
