It is oozing sticky liquid. Any idea why?

It could be caused by an injury to the plant (did something happen?) but most likely caused by pests. Look for signs of an insect infestation, possibly by aphids or mealy bugs, for example. The oozing sticky liquid is sap from the plant. The sap leaks out when the pests bite into the plant to feed.
