Jade Plant

I own a very large Jade plant, which is about 10 years old. I moved recently and a local garden centre housed it for me for about 10 weeks. I am concerned about it, as the leaves have a reddish tinge to them where previously they were only ever dark green. It used to stand in my porch and was subject to extremes of weather with no problems and for the past few years has flowered at least once a year. During its stay at the garden centre, it was in an open greenhouse. Can you tell me what has happened to my plant and am I going to lose it?

I think the most likely cause is the change in light level between your porch, and the greenhouse. A change in light can cause a build up of chemicals that cause a reddish color. You might want to check the moisture levels, especially in the bottom of the pot, to make sure the garden center wasn’t overwatering. You also might want to do a soil test, there’s always a possibility of phosphorous deficiency.
