Q.Ivy In Outdoor Container

Zone Sacramento, CA | napavin added on May 31, 2023 | Answered

Hello, I have a larger pergola, that I would like to grow English Ivy or similar over as shade cover. Problem: It’s on a rather large paver patio and I don’t have ready access to plant in the ground. Can ivy be grown in large enough containers that would grow to the top of the pergola (10′) and not get root bound? Thanks, Dan

Yes, as long as you can pull it out once a year or every two years to give it a root trimming! Cutting off the bottom 1/3 of the root mass and replanting should be plenty to keep it from being rootbound.
