It is a tree philodendron and is supposed to look like that. If you cut the top of the trunk off to force it to put out side shoots, they may or may not come out at the base. If you do cut the top off, you can root it in a container of potting soil.

You might consider giving this one a new home and buying a philodendron that is not a tree variety and will grow from the base.
