Is White Ginger the Same as the Spice?

Is white ginger the same as the spice? Looks the same. The white ginger I have in abundance has a white flower with a pleasant smell. Its roots look like the ones found in the grocery stores. Is it safe to be used in cooking?

It is not edible. While they are related, white ginger is not to be used for cooking. It won’t kill you, but may make you feel unwell.
