Is this plant a weed?

These have suddenly appeared in numerous areas of our large garden. We have only recently moved to this address.

It may be a pokeweed. If it puts out grape like berries, that's it. The berries are poisonous to humans but birds love them. The problem is the birds drop the seeds all over the yard and you are stuck with removing them, and they don't pull up easily.
