Is This Desert Gem Cacti (succulent) Alive?

Question

I found this colorful thistle like flower shaped in a ball in another plant with no I’d info. I searched for it and found that it is native from Mexico and named Colorful Desert Gem cacti but is a succulent plant. I am not sure if it’s alive. Can you tell by the picture I am sending you?

It looks like it could be alive. Try setting it on top of well draining soil (The brown spot may be the base) in a small container and see if it roots. Here is more:
