cutting roots on a plant that is not root bound

Is it safe to cut roots on a plant that is not root bound? I had a plant growing in water for too long (about 2 years) and the roots are so long!

Pothos have trouble moving to soil if they have grown for a long time in water.

If you feel the need to trim any roots, do this sparingly. I would recommend just spreading out the roots and potting it up.
