Is it okay to put mulch around a gardenia planted outdoors?

Someone told me NOT to do this, that gardenias don’t like it. I thought the mulch might hold moisture and provide some humidity, but maybe not. Please advise.

Mulch is always a good idea. It helps to conserve moisture and keep the plant healthy.
