For the most part, ants will not hurt the plant, but if you see the ants going on the plant, this may be a sign that there are aphids (ants milk aphids like humans do cows) and the aphids can hurt the plant.
Also, sometimes the ants are of the biting variety. If this is the case, it is best to get rid of them as they will hurt you trying to defect their home.
The easiest way to get rid of them is to submerge the pot the plant is in, in water for about an hour or so.
