Q.Is August 20 Too Early To Cut Back Iris Leaves?
They are bearded iris.

You can cut them back to 3 to 4 inches now; it's not too early. You can do the traditional inverted "V" shape or cut them straight across. You can divide your irises at the same time if they need it.
Be sure to clean up all the leaves and stems from the area so as not to harbor disease organisms for next year.

I have always cut back my iris after blooming - so sometime in summer or fall. I think cutting the flower stem and seed pod at the top of the stem helps them concentrate energy & nutrients into the roots instead of leaves or seed pod to make a stronger plant. I cut them to 6-8" tall.
