I just noticed today that my gardenia ‘tree’ has masses of white ‘something’ at the base of where the new buds are ready to open. Any solution?

It sounds as if your gardenia may be infected by mealy bugs. Here is an article that you may find helpful: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/plant-problems/pests/mealybugs-white-residue-on-plants-leaves.htm [1]

You should try using neem oil. It is effective and safe to use. Here is more information: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/plant-problems/pests/pesticides/neem-oil-uses.htm [2]
