Insect damage

I have an oak stump in the garden on which I am growing ferns. I have just discovered what seems to be the result of burrowing insects as seen in the photo. Do you know what they are and what to do to get rid of them? As the stump is part of a wildlife garden, I would prefer a natural approach.

Burrowing insects are not necessarily a problem in an oak stump, because they are a normal part of the decay process. If the insects are attacking the ferns, you could try neem oil, a natural insecticide:
