If I salt the soil, what is the diameter of damaged soil?

I have a 12 to 24 inch no man’s land between 2 fences. Several trees are growing into the wire fence and there are several old stumps. Smilax has taken over. Up the fence, into the trees, back down, through the azaleas, entwined with every root and stump. If I salt the area between the fences (I’ve dug up all the tubers I could find), how far away can the salt damage plants? Thanks!

I would recommend using glyphosate instead of salt to eradicate your smilax using the process described in the following article:
