Q.Figs Fall Off the Tree Before They Are Ripe

Zone GAUTENG | johneab added on December 12, 2011 | Answered

If figs fall off the tree before they are ripe, how can one ensure that they are still good to use. We are living in Benoni, in the Johannesburg area. The small unripe figs fall off the tree and we wish to make a fig preserve in brandy.

Figs will drop their leaves mainly due to water stress. I would increase the amount of water the tree is getting and also, check the roots to make sure that there is nothing damaging the roots that may prevent the tree from taking up enough water. Remember that the trees water needs will increase when it is in fruit.
