Q.identify old plant possible coyote bush 30+years old

Zone 95426 | Roberta Adams added on June 7, 2018 | Answered

Trying to identify a very old scrub/bush. I accidentally cut this one as the new growth was way over my head and I didn’t see the green. Pictures are of new leaf growth and old gnarly wood base.

Hello,
Thank you for sending us your gardening question.

Coyote brush has serrated leaf margins, your mystery plant has more elongated leaves with smooth leaf margins, a little different than what I usually see with the common California native, but the flower buds appear similar. I'm not sure, but it could be another species of Baccharis:

Baccharis salicifolia ssp. salicifolia; Mule Fat
