We have someone on staff who makes wood products so I asked him your question. He said it needs to be dried but it should be milled (sawed, cut, etc.) first. When drying, it should ideally be kiln dried, but if air drying, he said to google how to air dry wood before attempting. The general rule is one year of air drying for each inch of thickness.
