Removing 3 inch thick roots from fruit tree

We had an orange and lemon tree (entwined?) in our new garden. The blossom was peachy/pink and we have now cut this ‘tree’ down – it was about 7 ft high x 6 ft wide. We are left with 12-inch shoots/roots and they are about 3 inches thick. What is the best way to get rid of these, as they are too tough to dig up (we are ‘older’ people!)? Is there a cheap way of doing this? We will not be planting in that area so could we use bleach as an alternative?
