I over pruned the hackberry tree in my backyard and my husband is really upset because it looks really bare now.

I don't see a photo so it is hard to know exactly what happened. You may have cut off most of the leaves with the branches, which the tree needs for photosynthesis. Another hazard is hat racking, or cutting off the top of the tree.
