I Pruned My Roses For The First Time To Promote A New Flush Of Growth. There Is Now A Brown Ring Around The Tip

When I pruned, the tip of the stem was green, but now there’s a brown ring around it. Is this a sign I pruned wrong? The weather here is just beginning to get hot.

Pruning our roses is kind of like when we cut ourselves. The ring you see is typically the healing process for the rosebush. It can be a sign too that the pruners are dull and need sharpening. The cleaner they cut the less crushing of the cane tissues they will do. I use bypass pruners and never the anvil type as the anvil type crushes a lot of rose cane tissue and can cause some significant cane die back after pruning.
