I over pruned my sago palm.

I have pruned my sago plant and now it has not sprouted for over a year. There are some orange buds. Is there any hope? It’s in full sun.

This is a very common reason for the death of a sago. There is some hope, but not from the existing tree. Once all or almost all fronds are damaged, the tree will start its slow decay to death. Those cones that you see are likely pollen sacs. This is the plants last ditch effort to keep its genetics around. If there is a female cycad nearby, then you may get seeds, but on its own your palm will not reproduce.

There is hope however… Sometimes, they will sprout a replacement palm next to the original. This will take over for the dead tree. However, if it has been a year with no sign of the next palm to come up, then your plant may be giving up.
