specifics on planting and growing a pink dogwood tree

I would like to plant a flowering pink dogwood tree in my yard. I need to know not only when to do this but any advice on how to keep it alive. I’ve heard it’s tricky. My husband passed recently and I will be planting it in his memory as he requested. Thank you.
