plant for a shady, moist area

I live in Kentucky and have a row of taxus shrubs that are at least 25 years old and I would like to replace them with either vegetables or fruit. This area is behind my garage and gets only half a day of sun and it stays pretty moist. I also think it would be best to plant something that will soak up excess moisture around my house. Any suggestions?
