Q.I Need Some Ideas Other Than Boxwood And Holly For A Plant That Will Keep Its Leaves In The Winter And Will Be Right Up Against Th
e house I have just lost three shrubs that were right up against the house. In front of them are nandinas and on either side of them are holly trees. I have boxwood on the other side, so I don’t want to duplicate boxwood or more holly, but I do want to be sure it doesn’t lose its leaves in the winter and I want to be sure it doesn’t have an invasive root system. Since I will also have to prune them to keep them below the windows of the house, I need the limbs not to be too thick and tough that it will make it hard for me to prune. You have several options in broadleaved evergreens as well as needled evergreens. If you buy a plant whose mature size fits where you put it, you shouldn't have to do a lot of pruning, if any. Here are some ideas:
